JOASW 37th Annual Concours d’Elegance Report

The 2007 Concours d’Elegance was the 37th in a string of fabulous shows in the JOASW. This show was a new record again in the variety and caliber of show cars entered with seven perfect 100 point cars presented—all in the Championship Class! All scores have been audited and verified, all protests have been noted and excised, and all judges fully vetted and qualified to pronounce club results as reported.
Congratulations to the 2007 Club Champions.

A record seven Jaguars achieved perfect scores in their respective classes, indicative of the quality of show cars entered in this year’s concours. Also notable in the competition were two cars restored this year by Leland Kew, a ’53 XK-120 and companion ’66 3.8S in Old English white; and last year’s winner Franklin Schaffer’s fully documented XKE OTS which scored just off perfect scores! Brock
McPherson led off the perfect scores with his ’68 XKE Coupe, followed by David Nichols’ now 8-times National winning ’91 XJ6 VDP. Then,
building up from last year, three ladies went all out in class C-015B in a competitive white-out! Cynthia Loveall, HOA and Fred Horner winner,
and JOASW Alexandra Eaton and Margaret McDowell raised the bar to the perfect score level, exhausting the C-1 judging team having over 200 years of combined experience in Jaguar lore. A rousing “hip, hip, hoorah” to these Jaguar lasses for their efforts, expertise and competitive spirit! Jim Hockstadt, SAJC and Dave Belanger JCOH rounded out the perfect scores with their XK8 and S-Type, respectively.

In the Driven Class 20 competitors competed in 10 Classes for a very well turned out competition, including four novice entries. Almost all scores exceeded 9.9 for a lively run for the trophys. Knick Curtis’ perennial favorite XKE started off followed by newby Lane Haviland’s 2 entries XKE & XJS. Mike Sunday surprised us with Ruth Buzze’s MKII, which could have gone Championship Class. Paul Ridley’s MKII was close behind-great cars from the sixties! Bob Saylor JCOA
Prepped his XJ^ to the teeth, just beating out the David Nichols VDP with the outlaw Wires. Sondra Phillips XJ6 VDP, professionally prepared bested Don McClanes’s by 1 thousandth of a point! Mike and Laura Broyles lay claim to Class D-08A for the 3rd time, but Buck Buchanan is coming up fast. You just cannot beat Dennis Cheever’s XJS, although Jack Fortenberry brought his XJS project car near in class D-08B. also, newby Bryan Sanderford learned the ropes fast in getting the XKR in shape for competition after just his first year—a Club champion in D-09! Dennis, with his second car entry and Dave McDowell crossed swords in Class D-10. Again, newby Teresa Ross was a last minute entry in Class D-11 and took the honors in her first outing!
Thanks to Fred Carvajal and Perry tong for filling out the Driven Classes.

A very special thanks to Chief Judge and Concours Chairman, David Nichols for his organization and stewardship of the JOASW Concours d’Elegance ship of state, the professional judges who brought off the show without a formal protest and the Carvajals for the pre-show cocktail party and karaoke sing-along, and the Concours Committee for tireless effort in fund-raising and support. Of course, we thank our favored sponsors Motorcars Limited and Dealers Millennium and Autobahn, as well as, a host of donors, advocates and supporters of this grand old Jaguar Owners Club.

As the strains of the North Texas Univ. jazz combo sponsored by Orion
Antiques, Hill Country Exploration and David Nichols wafted over the assembly of Jaguar lovers, we adjourned to the awards dinner where
David Nichols was awarded the second annual Jim Russell-Redman placque for his contributions to the promulgation of the JOASW in 2007.

Thanks to all the participants in the 37th Concours event, making this a memorable, record setting and fun experience for this loyal and grand band of Jaguar Owners since 1963…

In the fellowship of Jaguar,

Respectfully submitted,

Your JOASW Directors
