JOASW 36th Annual Concours Report

The 2006 Concours d’Elegance sanctioned by the JCNA had it all, including intrigue, pathos, deceit, covertness mystery, indignation, jubilation and triumph. In the course of human endeavor, it was all there in a Jaguar weekend in Dallas. A record 39 Jaguars were registered in 12 Driven and 8 Championship classes, including 8 rookies and 7 out of town entries.

A record 6 Jaguars achieved perfect scores in their respective classes, indicative of the quality of show cars entered in this year’s Concours. The lead-off was Dean & Doris Davis’ of Austin frame-off restored 1956 XK-140. Then, Franklin Shaffer of the Delaware Valley Jaguar Club brought his one owner, fully documented
1968 E-Type for another 100.000 score, followed by our own David & Judy Nichols 6-time national winning 1991 XJ-40 VDP. Dave Belanger of Houston won a perfect score with his immaculate S-Type and the popular favorite XKD of Tony & Betty Temple from Austin was outstanding in Class S-4. A very rare example of the Jaguar racing heritage. And, patriarch’s Brock & Barbara McPherson’s XK-120 scored a perfect 10 in Driven D-1. This was really a unique show to see such excellent Jaguars up close—a very rare event and a first for JOASW.

The competition in Class C-15b was so heavy that entries were undecided on classes until the very last minute and the judges had a very difficult job to sort out the Best Jaguar in Class! A last minute entry by new member Alexandra Eaton’s 2-day before the show purchase of a low-miles 1995 XJS cabriolet threw the Class into chaos where she came in a strong 2nd place first time out in Concours, next to last year’s runner-up
National champion Cynthia Loveall from Topeka. Cynthia was feted at t our awards dinner having won the prestigious Fred Horner award by JCNA last year.
The Gilkeson’c came in just a 100th of a point below taking 3rd and the McDowells continued curse of the Boot rounded out the Class.

The second most strategically bounded Class was C-14
Where the powerful XJR’s reigned again supreme over rookie Dick Walkers VDP. Diane Buchanan ignored last year’s secret weapon allowing Cliff’s XJR to again tie for first place, proving once again experience pays!
Five entries scored 99.98, another record for JOASW.

Then in Driven two rookies took first places in D-8a & b, as well as in D-10 and 11, where Deby Warners XJ8 VDP tied the McDowell’s VDP and Don Wood’s
S-Type won for the first time. E-types were well represented by Knick curtis, Frank Leftwich and John
Krieger in their respective classes.

All in all, a great day for the Jaguar marque showcasing a new XK8 from Overseas Motors and Club Class entries with the 356 Porsche of Richard Cross, XKE from Buckan Buchanan and a formula Jr Terashi/Fiat from J.C. Taylor taking honors.
Well, a great big thanks to the Concours committee headed up by David Nichols and to Fred & Judi Carvajal for the fantastic cocktail party the night before. Also to our chief Judge Rufus Coburn of Austin and his crew of experienced show judges which brought off the Show without a formal protest! While Dick Walker was complaining about his class, Cliff’s disqualification motion was overturned by the group.

As the strains of the North Texas U. Jazz combo sponsored by Orion Antiques and Hill Country Exploration wafted over the assembly and we adjourned to the awards dinner where Michael Mann was awarded our first Jim Russell-Redman plaque for his 12 Concours and traveling over 20k miles last year in name of JOASW.

Last but not least, a special thanks to our local Jaguar dealers, Autobahn, Overseas and Millennium and especially Motorcars Ltd for their Jaguar service and parts support in 2006, as well as a host of other supporters and advocates of this grand old Jaguar Club—a loyal and fun band of Jaguar Owners since 1963!
